This instalment of the Lunchtime lecture series will focus on ‘The seismic design of tunnels and underground structures’ in collaboration with ITA AITES WG9.

The episode will feature three lectures and will finish with a Q&A with all speakers. It will begin at 13:00 CET.

  • Overview of seismic design – Conrad Felice
The international earthquake risk, the risk to ITA member nations, and the role of Working Group 9. Specific concerns to be addressed in a seismic design for tunnels and underground structures in earthquake-prone areas will be presented, along with examples of systems that have been damaged by past earthquakes.
  • Framework for seismic design & analysis of underground structures – Youssef Hashash
Specific procedures and analysis practices required to design a tunnel or underground structure in a seismic environment. Available methodologies will be presented, including both empirical and numerical methods, and specific areas of concern will be highlighted compared to traditional static analysis.
  • Case studies – Angel Del Amo & Carlos Jaramillo
The seismic analysis of a fault-crossing tunnel, emphasizing the critical understanding of seismic hazards and their implications for tunnel design and safety.

Following the three presentations there will be time for Q&A with the presenters.

The Lunchtime lecture series remains free and open to all.
