Topic: Practical Aspects of Segmental Tunnel Lining Design

After several decades of continuous progress, mechanized tunnelling has now become the main method applied in almost all types of geology, all sizes, and in increasingly shorter lengths. The predominant excavation support system for TBM tunnels consists of a one-pass precast concrete segmental liner which in addition to typical use in soft ground contexts is also increasingly applied in competent rock settings to better manage the geotechnical and hydrogeological risks. The first presentation of this lecture covers necessary details for analysis and design and provides in-depth information allowing tunnel engineers to start designing tunnel segmental linings. The required elements of concrete technology are presented in the second presentation and the last presentation describes the use of fiber for reinforcing segmental linings which has become the preferred solution for most cases.

This instalment of the Lunchtime lecture series will focus on practical Aspects of Segmental Tunnel Lining Design.

This episode will feature three lectures:

  • Basic Principles of Tunnel Segmental Liner Analysis and Design – Verya Nasri
  • Technology challenges to meet sustainability goals of concrete used for tunnel segmental linings – Barzin Mobasher
  • Use of Fiber for Tunnel Segment reinforcement – Benoit De Rivaz

Following the three presentations there will be time for Q&A with the presenters.

Verya Nasri, AECOM

Benoit De Rivaz, Bekaert Underground Solutions

The Lunchtime lecture series remains free and open to all. For all those that cannot join ‘live’ online, please register and you will receive a link to stream the episode after the event – this link will be valid for 24 hours only. After these 24 hours, anyone wanting to watch the episode can do so by registering for the episode on the ITA website, but there will be a small fee to watch.
