His winning paper is entitled: Discrete Fracture Network Approach in Ground Support Design Optimisation for Large Span Cavern in Jointed Rock Mass
Ivan Haryono was thrilled to receive the David Sugden Award on 13 October 2022 at the auspicious occasion of the ATS50 Anniversary Celebration and Dinner. Ivan received his award in Brisbane, but it was seen by all ATS members because the multi-location event was live-streamed across the whole country.
“I am extremely honoured to receive the 2022 David Sugden Award and really excited because, at the same time, we all celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Australian Tunnelling Society. I sincerely thank the ATS and the judges for this award,” he said.
An Associate Geotechnical Engineer with WSP-Golder, Ivan has 12 years’ experience in design and construction of international and large-scale underground projects in Hong Kong, Canada, Australia, Singapore and the Netherlands. His work spans mining and other large scale surface infrastructure projects and he has authored, co-authored and presented several technical papers on tunnelling and numerical modelling at international conferences.
Ivan is an advocate of innovative and non-conventional approaches to solving engineering problems and finding cost-effective solutions and said that winning the award inspires him to keep pushing the boundaries of the industry.
“It really motivates me to contribute more to our society and industry. Winning this award would not have been possible without the inspiration I’ve received from my mentors, seniors, and peers; for whom I have the deepest respect – I sincerely thank each one of them.”
The David Sugden Award was initiated by the ATS in 2004 to encourage young engineers to develop the art of technical writing. The competition is open to all ATS members and university students under 35 years of age.
